and Services Administration (HRSA) has a requirement to award a
contract to provide for a National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses
2000. The objective of this study is to obtain data on the size and
characteristics of the registered nurse (RN) population in the United
States, for each State, and for policy relevant subgroups of the
population as of March of 2000 as required by Congressional mandates.
The survey design is to follow that of the previous six surveys with an
expected sample size of 54,000 licenses and a response rate of at least
80 percent. The universe of RNs in the United States (more than 2.8
million RNs) is to be compiled from data collected from each of the 50
States and the District of Columbia. The data to be collected include:
(a) number and distribution of nurses, by type of employment and
location practice, (b) number of nurses practicing full-time and
part-time within the United Stated and within each state, (c) average
rate of compensations for nurses, by type of practice and location of
practice, (d) the activity status of the total number of nurses with
advanced training or graduate degrees in nursing, by specialty
including nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians, nurse researchers,
nurse educators, and nurse supervisors and administrators, and (f)
number of nurses entering the US annually from other nations. The
solicitation will be issued on or about June 1, 1999. You may be able
